Paragangliomas and Pheochromocytomas - July 2024

Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas (PPGL) are neuroendocrine tumours that are hard to treat once they have metastasised (spread throughout the body). All current treatments for metastatic PPGL are non-curative, and don’t target the molecular basis for the disease. Endocrinologist, Veronica Boyle is joined by medicinal chemist and researcher Dan Conole as they break down what pheos and paras are, and discusses a novel targeted therapeutic approach they are working on for succinate hydrogenase B (SDHB) mutated PPGL, which is highly prevalent in Māori PPGL patients. Through working with clinicians and NECNZ, they hope their research will lead to better outcomes for patients with SDHB mutated PPGL. ​
